Martin Andersson's unbeaten century helped Derbyshire recover from a disastrous start and reach 300 on the opening day of their County Championship Division Two match against Kent at the OurCoop County Ground.
Derbyshire were in serious trouble after Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud claimed wickets with the first two deliveries of the match. Mahmud eventually finished with excellent figures of 4-30 as Kent's bowlers repeatedly put the hosts under pressure.
But Andersson produced a determined innings of 129 not out from 190 balls to turn the contest around. It was his third century of the season and came after Derbyshire had slipped to 64-4.
The all-rounder first combined with Luis Reece to rebuild the innings. The pair added 91 runs from 191 balls before Reece was dismissed for 32, ending a partnership that had given Derbyshire some much-needed stability.
Andersson continued to anchor the innings after Reece's departure. Brooke Guest added a useful contribution before Mahmud struck again, trapping him lbw. Ben Aitchison then fell to Bertie Foreman's off-spin, leaving Derbyshire at 172-7.
Brett Randell provided valuable support at the other end, helping Andersson guide Derbyshire beyond 200 and eventually to 300. Andersson reached his century from 159 balls, hitting 11 fours along the way, and received applause from the Kent players for his determined effort.
Derbyshire secured a batting point before Randell was dismissed for 29. Jack Morley was then bowled by Khaled Ahmed, who was making his debut for Kent.
Mahmud added another wicket when he trapped Shoaib Bashir lbw, taking his tally to four. Kent then lost Ben Compton for three shortly before the close, caught at point off Ben Aitchison.
Kent finished the day on 11-1, with Bertie Foreman unbeaten on four and Zak Crawley on three. They trail Derbyshire by 289 runs after the first day.
Mahmud's opening spell initially appeared to put Kent firmly in control, but Andersson's unbeaten century and crucial partnerships transformed the day for Derbyshire.
